6th - 8th Grade Literary Suite

In grades 6-8, students are asked to move beyond comprehending a text to analyzing it. Students are asked to analyze authors’ choices about characters, settings, and plots to deepen understanding of the texts. In addition, readers must understand how a theme is developed over the course of a text. In addition, students are asked to analyze characters' interactions, dialogue, and responses over the course of a text and determine how they propel the plot and develop the theme.

The 6-8 grade literary menu is comprised of 15 formative tasks that evolve through grade level standards and are aligned to the following literature learning targets:

  • I can write a concise and objective summary based on the most important parts of a story.
  • I can demonstrate the difference between an objective summary and analysis of a text.
  • I can describe and analyze the stages of plot development and their impact on the overall text.
  • I can describe a character’s responses to setting, plot, and other characters.
  • I can analyze how characters develop and change over the course of a text through a variety of literary elements.
  • I can explain how dialogue propels action and reveals aspects of a character in a text.
  • I can determine multiple themes of a text.
  • I can analyze the theme over the course of a text in relation to characters, setting, and plot.

The Family Resource Guide (which also comes in Spanish) supports families who are coaching students at home. Each formative task has a family resource page that includes:
